Newry Style City

Newry Style City

Sometimes I feel like I am one of those terrible people who doesn't know anywhere outside their own city. I've travelled a lot outside of Ireland, but my knowledge of places not too far from home is rubbish. Barring Dublin I don't see much of the rest of Ireland, so it was really lovely to be asked to go on a Food and Fashion tour of Newry city. Newry is about an hour outside of Belfast, I've only ever passed through it on the way to Dublin. I can definitely say after being introduced to it yesterday I will be back! Here's how me and a bunch of other Fabb bloggers spent our Tuesday...

Newry Style City

Starting off in Grounded learning about the new trend in the coffee world, slow brewing. Now, I'm more of a tea girl but even I had to admit this had a lovely sweet taste to it! That's a Chemex brewer there, I guess coffee really is an art form and it's a bit sad that Starbucks has turned it all into RUSHRUSHRUSH when really coffee is something to sit down and enjoy.

Absolutely loving these goodies from Bows Boutique! The flamingo dress is from Sugarhill Boutique, I'd always been wary about ordering from them as their sizes only go to L, which is usually a 16. There were only S and M stocked here, but they looked roomy enough that I might give that milkshake dress a try!

After Bows we visited Bogart, a mens suit shop. Damn, now only if I could get Ali in a suit! Such a lovely shop, if only it also sold Don Drapers! We were kindly given a tie to take home to our Mr so there's some hope yet.

We were spoiled with a Tapas lunch in Art Bar Funkel (eh, most amazing name ever?!) - had to try the chicken wings! Ali and I are making the rounds trying as many as we can here, the blue cheese dip was amazing as were the ribs pictured above, yum!

Neons in Snaubs Boutique, sigh...I am just drawn to them. They're so amazing! I'm dreaming of a fluro pink Cambridge Satchel for my birthday, we shall see!

Next we went to Jack Murphy Jewellers and were utterly SPOILED ROTTEN, being allowed to try on as many diamonds as we wanted and being given frozen strawberry daiquiris, sounds like heaven eh? Check out that ring above, utterly dreamy.

Finishing off the day in Canal Court Hotel with some afternoon tea. I was so sorry we had to rush off and get our train, because I could have spent hours here! Probably the best scones I have ever eaten, amazing friendly staff and excellent sandwiches. Actually, I would go back to Newry just for this, wonderful.

A few Instagram snaps from the day...

Cake Mondays 006: Red Velvet Cheesecake

Hey folks! Sorry Cake Mondays has been a bit MIA lately! I can't remember what happened 2 Mondays ago, and last week I did bake but we were having a party on Monday so I sorta forgot...oops.

Anyway, it was Ali's birthday a few days ago so while he was distracted playing with all the Star Wars lego I bought him (he turned 25) I made him this red velvet cheesecake. We'd had a bit of cake overload since I baked this Direwolf chocolate cake for the party on Monday (it was a Game of Thrones Season 3 premiere party!), so cheesecake was a bit of a change!

Direwolf Cake

So, on to the cheesecake! I was an idiot and used a pan that was too wide, so the cheesecake came out really thin. I whipped up some of the cheesecake-like frosting from the Nigella guiness cake to top it up with, this frosting is actually nearly 100% the same recipe as Nigella's cheesecake recipe - so once chilled it sets like a normal cheesecake would - plus I think the red and white looks pretty! This is super easy to make, like...if you can't make this you might have something to worry about. Enjoy!

Red Velvet Cheesecake

Red Velvet Cheesecake - from Edd Kimber's 'Say it with Cake'.

Ingredients:

Base:
-200g oreo cookies (recipe says with the filling scraped off, but I just mixed them all. What's an oreo without the filling?!).
-80g unsalted butter.
-Pinch of sea salt.

Cheesecake:
-100g dark chocolate.
-230 full fat cream cheese.
-5 tbsp caster sugar.
-150ml double cream.
-Red food colouring

Frosting:
300 grams cream cheese
150 grams icing sugar
125 ml double cream (or whipping cream)

1. Put the oreos in a bag and crush them with a rolling pin, or if you're fancy use a food processor. Melt the butter and mix with the cookies. Squash into a 20cm tin or pie plate and put in the fridge until needed.
2. Melt the chocolate and set aside. Beat the cream cheese and sugar together until smooth and creamy. In a seperate bowl, whip the cream, Fold into the cheese mixture, then add the red food colouring. Pour in the chocolate and gently fold in.
3. Take the cookie base out of the fridge and spread the cheesecake mixture on top. Leave in the fridge to chill for 2 hours or overnight.
4. Once your cheesecake has chilled, mix up a batch of this frosting to top it off with. Just spread it on and serve! Yum!

These photos don't demonstrate just how insanely neon this dress is. It is...bright. I actually didn't realise it was so bright until I left the house in it and went out in daylight (I also didn't realise I sat through lunch with the cardboard ASOS label hanging down my back until afterwards, but that's another story). I'd been looking at this bag on ASOS a few months ago and for some reason didn't get it, but then I saw Vicki with it at the Next event and realised just how cute it was. I love it! I think I have a handbag obsession.

Lola wanted to join in the photoshoot. Like myself, she's currently loving that there is sun and no snow any more! Roll on summer please!

Kind of pissed that this song isn't on Spotify, I finally caved and am paying for a premium subscription so hit me with your music recommendations!

I love Lamp: Next Home.

Something a little different today! Ali and I are currently house hunting (I thought my MA would be the most stressful thing I'd ever do, no - house hunting definitely beats it!) so this was the perfect event to go along to! Next Home invited some bloggers to tour their Holywood Exchange store last week. I love homeware,  had to try to hard to resist buying more for my kitchen. I need all the surface space I can get, however I did indulge in my favourite item, lighting! I swear my fancy lights account for half of our electric bill.

I loved the bright colours, yellow especially. Is there a more cheerful colour?

Miss GLB headed right to the Hello Kitty kids section!

Oh and I had to post the disco toilet seat, Dawn said she would laugh at me forever if I bought this. I was so tempted! In the end I went for this gorgeous Daisy lamp. Sorry for the packaging still being on, but I'm saving it for the new house! I may have to go back for that owl lamp. I'm also loving my Next diffuser - my living room has never smelled better!

I want to thank Next for allowing me to come along, they were so generous and spoiled us with champagne and food at the beautiful Merchant Hotel Belfast while we previewed their new advert. It's really nice to see brands visiting Belfast and throwing blogger events - so thank you next! I can't wait to raid the store when we find our new home.
